Charles A Asiedu - Vice Chairman -

Email: vicechair@thecommonwealthlegion.org

Charles A Asiedu is an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Nurse specialist in the Queen Alexandra Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC) within the Defence Medical Services in the HM Forces. As the only member of the current team still serving, the idea of building such an organisation as a support network for soldiers and for better recognition for veterans of commonwealth descent is paramount to me based on my service experience over the years. Having witnessed and heard some of the specific challenges that most commonwealth veterans/those currently serving routinely face when transitioning into the civilian environment, gave me the drive to be part of such an organisation.

Charles Asiedu joined the military as a commonwealth soldier from Ghana in 2001 as a supply controller in the Royal Logistics Corps (RLC). He served with 32 Royal Artillery Regiments in Larkill and 3 Close Support Regiment in Abingdon post his phase 1 and 2 training.

Looking for a different challenge within the service that suited him most, he transferred to the QARANC in 2005 to train as an adult nurse at Defence School of Healthcare Education at Birmingham City University. Post qualification as a registered nurse till date, Charles have served at various postings within UK main land and other overseas operational commitments in providing medical cover and delivering care under various circumstances depending on the mission.

In his passionate desire for critical care nursing, Charles returned to Brighton University to pursue his ambition of becoming an ICU nurse specialist within the military and completed his speciality course in 2012/2013 academic year. This enhanced his nursing knowledge and practice in this speciality hence fulfilling his ambition.

Over his ongoing service within the military, Charles has been awarded some service medals for both routine and special operations as a nurse. However, the medal that he is most proud of as a serving soldier of commonwealth descent is the LSGC Medal (Long Service and Good Conduct Medal) at his sixteenth year point.

In addition to his nursing Speciality Charles also hold a postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Management in Health & Social Care as well as the (CMI) level 4 Diploma in management and leadership.

Outside his service life Charles is also actively involved in his local Ghanaian community in Portsmouth where he serves as the Vice Chairman of the Ghana Association of Portsmouth (GHAP). As association that promotes the wellbeing and interest of the Ghanaian community and also foster self-help within the locality as well as supporting under privileged communities in Ghana through self-help initiatives.

Charles is a Christian by faith and believes in the goodness of humanity and supporting one another. He is also a father with 3 children and married to Emma.
